Hanks Enjoys Chili Bowl Nationals and Midget Debut

Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 16, 2018) – Brandon Hanks is all smiles following his Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals debut last week.

Hanks drove for Chris Chappue during the 32nd edition of the marquee event inside the River Spirit Expo Center, where he kicked off the racing action on Wednesday by advancing from sixth to fifth place in a heat race.

“We moved forward and were in a great battle for third and fourth,” he said. “I was on the outside, but kept getting pinched off. For several laps in a row I felt so close to being able to get up to third, but I never had the room and we lost a spot late to finish fifth.”

Hanks narrowly missed advancing into a qualifier and therefore started third in a C Main. He picked up a position to finish second and transfer into the back of a B Main.

“That was my first night of racing a midget so all the laps we could get were helpful,” he said. “I felt like we made progress from the heat to the C Main to the B Main. For me, it’s about learning as much as I could and trying to put those lessons to use the next time on the track.”

An 11th-place result in the consolation race thanks to being caught up in someone else’s crash lined Hanks up seventh in an H Main on Saturday’s finale.

“We ended up finishing sixth in the H Main because there wasn’t much passing,” he said. “That put us right about midpack out of 345 drivers who tackled the event so that’s not bad for our first time racing there and first time in a midget.”

Hanks is optimistic about his chances in the future based on his growth throughout his first time ever racing a midget.

“I’m excited about our progression race by race and I’m hopeful I can race the Chili Bowl next year,” he said. “I think the more midget experience I get will help and will show in the results.

“I want to thank Chris for the tremendous opportunity. It was a dream come true to race the Chili Bowl and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
