A
competitor in the inaugural Chili Bowl in
1987, Sammy will become just the second
driver to compete in 20 editions of the
event with this year's event. Along
the way, Sammy has watched the Chili Bowl
Nationals evolve from its humble
beginnings into the mind-boggling,
blockbuster event that it has
become. Sammy has done a lot more than
just watch though, authoring his fair share of pages in the Chili Bowl
history books by ranking as the only driver
to win the Chili Bowl on fivee occasions
with triumphs coming in 1989, 1992, 1996,
1998 and then again in 2009.
While
five Chili Bowl wins is unmatched, perhaps
one of the most memorable Swindell moments
at the Chili Bowl occurred in 2003 when he charged from a
Saturday "E" Main all the way up
to second midway through the main event
when driveline problems finally derailed
his heroics.
Sammy's
Chili Bowl success is merely a reflection
of the success encountered over the course
of his unrivaled career that includes
World of Outlaws titles, stints in the
upper ranks of both Indy Car and NASCAR
racing, approximately 600 career feature
wins and victories in virtually anything
worth winning.
After
sweeping through the 2009 edition of the
Chili Bowl Nationals in dominant fashion,
Swindell picked off another handful of
wins over the course of the year including
a $10,000 triumph at Southern Iowa
Speedway's Front Row Challenge and then a
$15,000 score in the season-ending event
for the Lucas Oil Sprint Cars at USA
Raceway's 42nd Annual Western World
Championships in Tucson, AZ.
