Joe Boyles, who finished a strong fourth in the 2000 Chili Bowl Nationals, suffered engine problems in hot laps and was sidelined for the remainder of the 2003 Chili Bowl Nationals.

Boyles won the September 20 Southern Midget Racing Series (SMRS) event at LA Speedway in LaMonte, MO, en route to his second SMRS championship in 2003.
